Why Orla exists
We face profound ecological and societal challenges: climate change, resource constraints, financial instability, and widening inequality. These are not isolated problems — they are deeply interconnected systems.
Yet the tools we use to understand these systems are often fragmented, opaque, or difficult to communicate. Many models live in spreadsheets, code, or specialist software that makes them hard to explore interactively or share with others.
Orla is an attempt to change that — to create a more visual, intuitive, and rigorous way to build and communicate dynamic models of real-world systems.

About the founder
Orla was founded by Matt Bittlestone, who holds first-class degrees in Mathematics from Oxford and Ecological Economics from Leeds, and is a Chartered Global Management Accountant.
He has over 15 years’ experience working for leading technology firms and tech start-ups, combined with experience founding and serving as chair of a charity. Through his design and delivery of the highly innovative Accounting Intuition training courses, he has taught over 100,000 learners how business accounting works.
He is passionate about helping people understand complex economic and financial systems with clarity. His research interests include stock-flow consistent macroeconomics, ecological economics, public money, and demurrage.
